The Crowned Lapwing in Zimbabwean Folklore

The Crowned Lapwing Vanellus coronatus bears the black, white, and red colouration commonly associated with spirit mediums, and is therefore respected as such by many Zimbabwean people.

These are sociable birds, normally found in small groups in fairly open habitat, frequenting fields, roads, or paths near villages, or areas surrounding cattle enclosures. Here they are often disturbed, flying ‘explosively’ skywards, while uttering a harsh, excitable call. Crowned Lapwings may also be particularly raucous at night, with this nocturnal calling interpreted by many Shona and Ndebele people as a means to summon witches, directing them by chanting ‘Kure, kure’, which translates as ‘it’s far, it’s far’.

A number of people also maintain that should one of these birds enter a village, bad luck or death will certainly prevail. Similarly, many believe that should one cross a person’s path, all will not bode well for the future. However, in contrast, some Manyika and baTonga people that I interviewed considered this bird to be a benign messenger that warns of impending danger as it suddenly calls and flies up from the path ahead.

The Grey Crowned Crane in Zimbabwean Folklore

Due to its stately appearance and unusual haunting call, the Grey Crowned Crane Balearica regulorum is perceived as a dominant bird, widely associated with power and royalty by the Ndebele people.

Although these birds may cause crop damage by feeding on newly planted seeds and young shoots, they are not generally harmed, as it is believed that to do so would certainly bring bad luck. Their presence is said to signify that all is well in the lands, and indeed many who live alongside this species welcome their courtship ‘dances’ during the early summer months.

As with other crane species in Africa, these birds are becoming increasingly vulnerable due to habitat destruction, poisoning and collision with power lines.

While the Blue Crane Anthropoides paradiseus does not occur in Zimbabwe it is near-endemic to South Africa, where the Xhosa and Zulu peoples once regarded it as a symbol of masculine power. Indeed, the plumes of this species were awarded to senior leaders and warriors as recognition of prowess in battle.

The Helmeted Guineafowl in Zimbabwean Folklore

Helmeted Guineafowl Numida meleagris are gregarious birds, often occurring in large and noisy flocks that feed on a variety of plant matter as well as invertebrates. Being a relatively common and widespread game bird, this species is well known to most people in Zimbabwe and often trapped or hunted for food.

During interviews, I came across the Ndebele and Nambya belief that if one is killed for the pot, it must be plucked before returning home. While the feathers must be buried far away from habitation, it is important that they are not burned. If this rule is not followed, it is said that bad luck will be brought into the village and quarrels and disagreements will result.

Guineafowl have also been depicted in San rock-art, although only at a few sites.

Due to their rounded body shape and relatively large clutch size, Guineafowl are widely associated with fertility and thus eggs are often used in annual purification rituals to bless both crops and state in Ghana.

This belief extends to matters of both human fertility and marital fidelity. For this reason, the Hausa of West Africa smash Guineafowl eggs against the front door of newlyweds to ensure marital bliss, however a wife may be forced to place an egg on the roof of the house to encourage the return of a wayward husband should this eventuate. An additional Zimbabwean folktale (that I personally did not encounter) tells of a downtrodden, childless wife that adopts a Guineafowl as her child and eventually seeks revenge on her neglectful husband through the bird.

The African Fish Eagle (and other raptors) in Zimbabwean Folklore

The African Fish Eagle Haliaeetus vocifer is another significant bird that featured in the legends of the Rozvi and this species is almost certainly depicted in another of the soapstone carvings discovered at the Great Zimbabwe.

As eagles (and some other raptors) are believed to be host to important spirits, these ‘bird stones’ have been interpreted as a metaphor for the mediating role of royal ancestors, mostly in the procurement of rain, but also in other matters. Indeed, the spirit of the last Rozvi Mambo (chief) was believed to have taken on the form of a Black Eagle Aquila verreauxii that now haunts and protects the Manyanga Ruins.

While historically the distinctive piercing call of the Fish Eagle ‘Shiri chena, shiri ye Mwari’ was said to pronounce the deity, an interesting Zezuru belief I came across is that bad luck will befall anyone who observes one of these birds catching a fish.

The Zulu forebears of the Ndebele greatly respected Fish Eagles, and associated them with orderliness and discipline, also naming certain valuable black cattle with white forequarters after them.

Another raptor, the Yellow-billed Kite Milvus migrans parasitus is widely regarded as a bearer of good tidings. This particularly agile intra-African migrant arrives in southern Africa just prior to the summer rainfall, and is often found near human habitation, where it may take small chickens or scraps. The latter habit has apparently led many to believe that this species fills the familiar role of the ‘tooth fairy’. Thus young children often leave their shed teeth on the roof of a hut for them to collect in exchange for good luck.

The Bateleur Eagle in Zimbabwean Folklore

The Bateleur Eagle Terathopius ecaudatus is perhaps the most respected bird in Shona and Ndebele folklore, and is even depicted in San rock art. Shona tribes still revere this eagle as an important totem (known as Chipungu) while its Ndebele name, iNqunqulu is said to be derived from the sound of two fighting birds beating their wings together, or the sound of warriors beating their spears against their shields before going into battle.

Eagles are generally regarded as potent messengers, associated with mediums and the ancestral spirit world, and the Rozvi who once ruled the area around the Great Zimbabwe believed that they were important intermediaries of royalty. Indeed, one legend describes how the severed head of a claimant to the Zwimba chieftainship was flown back to his people in the beak of a Bateleur after he had dared to approach the royal court to state his case.

It is also thought that the Bateleur is depicted in at least one of the seven soapstone carvings discovered at the Great Zimbabwe. Each of these differ significantly and are thought to represent the spirits of former chiefs or kings as some appear to incorporate human lips and toes. These carvings possibly served as a metaphor for the mediating role of royal ancestors between the spirit world below and the god Mwari (also known as Wokomsoro or Nyadenga) particularly in the procurement of rain. Lightning was regarded as the ‘needle that stitches together heaven and earth’, carried in both directions by an invisible eagle ‘Shiri de denga’.

Zezuru women traditionally greeted Chipungu by clapping and trilling while advancing towards a perched bird, and should one of these birds fly over a village a widow would be brought outside in black mourning dress to allow it to look down on her and appease the spirits of the dead.

The nesting area of this species is not generally disturbed and these birds are left to breed in peace by the Shona. As these eagles often nest near rivers, they are considered as important ‘gatekeepers’ and conduits for ancestral spirits that dwell within certain deep pools that serve as a portal to the spirit world below. A Bateleur may only be sacrificed by a n’anga as a last resort in order to alleviate severe drought, and it is believed that a violent flood will ensue after placing the bird in a bag and drowning it in a shallow pool.

As the Bateleur generally flies at a lower altitude than vultures, it is often the first large scavenging bird to locate a carcass, reinforcing the common belief that it is the ‘king of birds’, for whom all other scavenging birds must wait, allowing it to first consume the soft eyes and tongue of the dead animal. Only after the eagle has fed and flown away, may the vultures and other birds descend to feed.

The Ndebele also consider this bird as a powerful mediator and believe that forked lightning is created when two of these birds battle in the sky. The victor, when throwing its opponent earthwards, rips the clouds, causing jagged flashes of light. Historically the ‘nqunqulu’ call predicted the massing of armies, and a gathering of these birds in one location was perceived a certain precursor to war. It was also believed that those over whom the eagle flew would be defeated. The appearance of a Bateleur calling in flight over human habitation was also said to precede great misfortune or simply serve as a symbol of power and strength, while the shadow of a flying bird crossing one’s path was believed to cause certain madness.

These eagles often feed on snakes, which are also regarded as important spirit mediums and considered by many Ndebele to harbour vengeful spirits. Thus, isangomas and isanuse must obtain Bateleur bones and feathers as well as a python’s skin. Both of these animals must be killed unaided and the remains used to adorn their robe and girdle, which is said to render the wearer fearless, while enhancing their healing powers. Feathers may also be wrapped in a cigarette and smoked by a n’anga to strengthen his healing abilities and enhance his powers of prediction.

Vultures in Zimbabwean Folklore

Vultures provide vital ecosystem services and as they are adept at locating carrion from considerable distances, it is widely considered by local people in southern Africa that they possess highly developed clairvoyant powers.

Possession of a vulture’s head is widely believed to induce clairvoyant dreams that predict impending danger, the results of a gambling venture, or enhance the tracking of animals during an upcoming hunt. To reach a clairvoyant state and to gain insight on various matters on behalf of a client, n‘angas may smoke dried vulture brains mixed with herbs, while an infusion of vulture brains and herbs may also be administered directly to a client to induce a similar state. Ndebele isangomas and isanuse may wear vulture bones on their girdles to enhance their own powers, while the heart, feet and feathers are also much sought after for various other physico-medicinal purposes. Vulture body parts are thus often harvested for sale in traditional markets across the region.

The accessibility of modern pesticides and other poisons, along with heightened economic stress, has led to a marked increase in deliberate poisoning incidents, which often result in mass vulture mortalities and inadvertently put at risk those people who handle, ingest or inhale products derived from these poisoned birds. This unsustainable practice is noticeably more prevalent prior to elections, major examinations, horse races, football matches, or other high profile sports events, when the decapitated and dismembered remains of many vultures may be discovered at the poisoning site. The fact that circling vultures draw the attention of authorities to illegal poaching activities has now exacerbated the problem, as these birds may often be directly targeted for this reason, with body parts also removed opportunistically for sale.

The Lapped-faced Vulture Torgos tracheliotus, Hooded Vulture Necrosyrtes monachus, White-headed Vulture Trigonoceps occipitalis, African White-backed Vulture Gyps africanus and Cape Griffon Gyps coprotheres (pictured) are species most likely to be encountered in the region.

Similar, but perhaps even more expanded cultural beliefs regarding vultures are prevalent in West Africa, and while these birds are apparently afforded some traditional protection in Burkina Faso, a number of practices continue to drive the illegal trade in vultures and their body parts across other parts of the region.

Wildlife traders in Nigeria are mostly women of the Islamic faith from the Yoruba ethnic group, domiciled mainly in the southwestern areas of that country, as well as Benin, Togo, Sierra Leone and Ghana. This trading practice has been culturally preserved through generations, with certain religious beliefs acting as an additional driver. The Hooded Vulture and the Rüppell’s Griffon Gyps rueppelli, known as Igun and Akala respectively in the Yoruba language, are two of the most widely used raptors for belief-based purposes in southwestern Nigeria. As the harvesting of vultures for food is is generally considered a taboo by the Yoruba, collection mainly takes place for the purposes of a wide range of medicinal, spiritual, and ritual practices, including treatment of mental illness, epilepsy, strokes, safe birthing in women, spiritual protection against evil spirits and witchcraft, good fortune, as well as enhancement of clairvoyant powers as in southern Africa.

These cultural beliefs have evolved from a combination of entrenched religious beliefs and myths based on the characteristics of these birds, and indeed some buyers are motivated by ‘the doctrine of signatures’ in which the morphology or ‘signatures’of animals determine their choice of product. As such, the relatively long-life span of a vulture is believed to confer an increased life span for consumers of vulture products, while their habit of feeding on the carcasses of other animals confers additional power to the consumer. Perceived benefits could include increased business success, spiritual power, or good fortune, and are based largely on the ritualistic and symbolic power of the vulture rather than the medicinal benefits mentioned. This is despite the old local adage ‘we do not kill the vulture, we do not eat the vulture and we do not use the vulture as sacrifice to the gods to remedy human destiny’, a social norm which seems to have been largely lost and needs to be re-established.

Also of interest is the fact that ancient Egyptians revered vultures, and associated them with the two deities of femininity and motherhood, Nekhbet and Mut, both represented in vulture form with outstretched wings to symbolise maternal protectiveness and love.

Storks in Zimbabwean Folklore

The White Stork Ciconia ciconia (pictured) and Abdim’s Stork Ciconia abdimii are respectively Palearctic and intra-African trans-equatorial migrants that arrive in southern Africa with the summer rain fronts in large flocks, in order to take advantage of the seasonal abundance of insect and other small animal prey.

The arrival of large flocks corresponding with rainfall has long been recognised, and indeed they are the most numerous birds depicted in San rock art. Even contemporary local tribes continue to celebrate this migratory spectacle and believe that the larger the flock, the better the farming prospects for the imminent rainy season. This positive association with rainfall has led to the common belief that the arrival of storks signals that tilling of the lands should commence.

On the other hand, some people of Ndebele origin interviewed in the Matobo Communual Lands corroborated the more sinister belief that storks are also associated with lightning and thunder, and that a powerful rain goddess rides on their backs. The strike point of cloud-to-ground lightning is said to represent the specific locality where the stork has deposited its invisible eggs, which must be carefully removed by a n’anga to prevent a re-occurrence. If possible the item that was struck must also be destroyed by fire.

These beliefs appear to be derived from those shared by the Zulu and Xhosa peoples of South Africa who refer to the migratory storks as ‘impundulu ’ or ‘lightning bird’. Here, these birds are generally regarded as important familiars of witches, being employed for various nefarious purposes, such as a direct attack on a person, or even causing harm via means such as vampirism or illnesses such as tuberculosis.

Another stork worthy of mention is the imposing Marabou Leptoptilos crumenifer. Along with the vultures, this bareheaded bird is attracted to carrion, and due to its large size is thought by some to dominate feeding at a carcass. I noted that a number of Ndebele people identified this bird as ‘iNkosi-ya-amanqe’ or ‘King of the Vultures’ however I suspect that this may be the result of possible confusion with the Lappet-faced Vulture.

Flamingos in Zimbabwean Folklore

Two flamingo species are found sporadically at suitable waterbodies across Zimbabwe, namely the Greater Flamingo Pheonicopterus roseus (pictured) and Lesser Flamingo Phoeniconaias minor.

Due to the ephemeral nature of their occurrence, I found that these birds were generally unfamiliar to people in most areas, with the exception of those domiciled in drier southwestern areas of Zimbabwe, where flamingo remains are occasionally found under high-voltage power lines which straddle one of their migratory routes to and from the Magadikgadi pans in neighbouring Botswana.

The transitory nature and largely nocturnal movements of flamingos have indeed aroused deep suspicion amongst many local Ndebele and Kalanga people, who associate them with witchcraft, believing that that they purposefully fly high above the clouds in order to avoid detection by the average person. It is also said that lightning is caused as each bird exposes its red underwings to the clouds, and that heavy showers result as they urinate.

An isangoma or isanuse may sometimes collect flamingo feathers and place them on the roof of a home, or near animals owned by the rival of a client in order to attract lightning that will destroy the property. A discovered carcass is thus normally destroyed by fire and reduced to ashes so that the feathers cannot be used for such nefarious purposes, and under no circumstances are these birds eaten.

I have been unable to find additional verifiable information on flamingos in folklore from other regions of Africa, apart from a possible Egyptian linkage and correlation with the mythical Phoenix.

The Cattle Egret in Zimbabwean Folklore

The Cattle Egret Bubulcus ibis is a widespread member of the heron family Ardeidae, being an almost cosmopolitan species. During the interview process, I soon discovered that this conspicuous bird is widely recognised in southern Africa as being generally beneficial, also filling the role of an important messenger, particularly to people of Nguni origin.

As the common name implies, this bird is closely associated with cattle, and indeed the Zulu forebears of the Ndebele historically associated them with the pure-white royal herd. Due to their apparently tireless habit of following grazing livestock or game to catch insects disturbed from the grass, or to glean ticks from hides, they are often referred to as ‘inyoni kayiphumullu’ – ‘the bird that never rests’. They are also colloquially known as ‘tick birds’ and are believed to be ‘herders’ that guide and watch over the cattle during the day and return them home safely in the evening.

Another Ndebele belief is that these birds signify good luck and that the number of individuals comprising a flock in flight is a lucky number, which may prove useful in gambling or other future activities.

Despite the widespread distribution of this species (and other herons) they appear to feature little elsewhere in African folklore.

In Birds and People, brief mention is made of the fact that the name of the Cattle Egret in most Arabic speaking countries translates as ‘friend to the farmer’ and that herons were once recognised as the true birds of the Nile marshes by the ancient Egyptians. They were also known as a bird of the soul (benu), thought by some to have possibly given rise to the myth of the Phoenix, although this distinction more likely belongs to the flamingos, which will be discussed in the following post.

The Hamerkop in Zimbabwean Folklore

Due to its unusual habits and relatively strange appearance, the stork-like Hamerkop (Scopus umbretta) has become the subject of many taboos, making it one of the more eminent species, a fact which has almost certainly contributed to the ongoing protection of this species in the rural areas of Zimbabwe.

Hamerkops frequent suitable freshwater habitats, with a preference for quiet sections of rivers and streams where they often remain motionless for long periods, resting or scanning the water for frogs, tadpoles, and other aquatic prey, a habit which has led to the prominent common local belief that they are ‘vain’ birds that need only one eye with which to admire their own reflection.

These birds construct a particularly large stick and reed nest, normally situated in the fork of a tree or atop a boulder, often on a secluded riverbank. Construction may take many months and nests often contain unusual ‘bits and pieces’ such as bicycle tyres, plastic toys, string, rags, wire, building hardware, piping, tin foil, shoes and clothing, as well as bones and large feathers, all incorporated into the fabric. This habit of collecting various personal and household items is likened to the practice of a sorcerer gathering such items in order to cast a controlling spell, or for other nefarious purposes. This fact has not escaped the attention of local people, and during discussions I discovered that these items are indeed much sought after by traditional practitioners who may sometimes even destroy the nest to retrieve them. The hollow structure includes a single nesting chamber with only one downward facing entrance and are plastered internally with mud. However, despite this, it is commonly believed that these birds actually construct two chambers, with the additional one serving as a storehouse for bones, while multiple entrances enable a rapid escape, making the birds particularly difficult to catch. A person who is adept at evading others is thus likened to the Hamerkop.

I also recorded the Zezuru belief that, should a person place nesting material on the roof of a hut, a Hamerkop will soon discover it and proceed to strip the thatch. A person who collects and hoards ‘junk’ is likened to these birds. Another belief is that the act of nest disturbance may lead to madness and cause an ordinary person to become disoriented, following the bird on its wanderings. Anyone guilty of killing one of these birds would suffer a similar fate. In addition, the fact that other animals associated with the occult, such as snakes, may inhabit abandoned nests seems to have reinforced the belief that bad luck will befall anyone who dares interfere with the nest or birds.

As Hamerkops form a socially monogamous pair, the bones are sometimes used by Shona n’angas to form a potion to encourage fidelity in the husband of a female client, while Nambya people interviewed related that that a concoction made from this bird’s eggs will enable the recipient to become invisible.

Another common belief is that should one of these birds fly across your path, any travel plans for the day should be abandoned. However should one fly parallel to the intended route, this would indicate a safe journey ahead. A Hamerkop in flight over a homestead is said to signify a particularly bad omen, especially when calling, perhaps heralding the death of a close relative.

I found it surprising that despite the continued prominence of this unusual bird in contemporary folklore only one depiction of this bird is known in local San rock-art.

uThekwane – Ndebele/Kalanga
Sikabenge – Nambya
Masiyenuka – Venda/Sotho
Nyakhonzo – Shangaan
Lukonzo – baTonga

Broadly similar beliefs are shared throughout much of southern and Africa, with some slight variation within the basic common themes already mentioned. However, it appears that this trend is less uniform across the rest of the continent. With additional reference to the book Birds and People, I have attempted below to summarise some of these variations, along with other information that I did not encounter during Zimbabwean interviews.

A saying of the Lungu people of south-west Tanzania is that this species ‘builds a house but does not sleep in it’. This is in possible reference to their propensity for nest abandonment, even after a lengthy nest-building period. It is believed that the nest must pass a ‘test’ which involves a successful ‘first pass’ entrance at high speed. Upon failure, the nest is abandoned and another attempt must be made elsewhere.

Other prevalent beliefs from the Eastern Cape (South Africa) relate to the Hamerkop’s perceived role in heralding rainfall, possibly associated with active nest building in the period leading up to breeding in the rainy season. Indeed, in this same area a bird was found sacrificially killed and hung upside-down in a tree in order to appease the spirits for the procurement of rain during a period of drought. An association with lightning is also made both in the Eastern Cape and in northern Botswana, where the disturbance of a nest or bird would result in lightning strike on the perpetrator’s dwelling, directed by the calling or mere presence of one of these birds. It is interesting that I noted a broadly similar mixture of beliefs regarding either rainfall or lightning when dealing with other important species such as the Ground Hornbill, Bateleur Eagle, storks, and flamingos, which will be covered in future posts.

In some areas of Zambia, there appears to be little regard for this species, while the Mbeere of Kenya regard these birds as foolish and lazy and do not eat them simply due to their ‘unclean’ diet of frogs and tadpoles. However, at least amongst some of the neighbouring Kikuyu, these birds are still believed to be linked to sourcery.
